Fence Painting & Staining

Fence painting and staining in Charlotte, NC area

A fence takes more abuse than almost any other surface on your property. Unlike siding or trim, it's exposed to sun, rain, and ground moisture on both faces, it often sits closer to sprinklers and landscaping, and the posts are in direct contact with soil that stays damp for days after a storm. That's why a fence that's just "painted like the house" tends to fail years before it should.

Straight Edge Painting Pros finishes fences the way they're actually built to be treated — different products and prep for different materials, extra attention to posts and end grain, and application methods suited to open, exposed surfaces. • Picket and split-rail fences — brush, roll, or spray finish depending on style and spacing
  • Vinyl fencing — flexible, vinyl-safe coatings that won't crack as panels expand and contract
  • Metal and wrought iron fencing — rust treatment, primer, and a durable metal-rated topcoat
  • Gates, hinges, and hardware — matched to the rest of the fence line

Straight Edge Painting pros did an absolutely fantastic job painting the exterior of my 2700 square-foot home. They came out the same day to price the job. They were less than half the price of another company which I had contacted and Straight Edge completed the job in one day. The team spent more than an hour pressure washing the house. The paint job was top shelf. The house looks beautiful! Big thanks to Wes (owner) and his very professional team. I’d use this company again in a heartbeat and I highly, highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great paint contractor experience.

Straight Edge Painting Pros were recommended to us by a neighbor on our street, whose home was painted by them. We were thoroughly pleased with Wes, Josh, and the whole crew of hard workers. Our 40-year old home looks brand new again after repairs and painting, and we couldn’t be more pleased. We would highly recommend this company for any painting, including any repairs needed. The whole team was very punctual and great to work with!

I didn't know what quality painting was until I hired Straight Edge. Wes is quick to respond, and scheduling is a breeze. The painters meticulously protect the floors, cabinets and fixtures (etc.) to prevent unwanted spatters. They are skilled, courteous and professional. Nice clean-up job afterward. And the value is excellent - I am very pleased with their prices and their workmanship.

Why fence painting & staining isn't the same job

A few things make fences their own category of work:

Ground contact and post rot.
The bottom 6–12 inches of a wood post absorbs moisture from the soil long before the rest of the fence shows wear. We inspect every post for soft spots and rot before finishing, and repair or replace what's compromised — painting over a rotting post just hides the problem for a season.
Two exposed faces, no roof overhang. Siding and trim get some protection from your roofline. A fence gets full sun and rain on both sides with nothing to shield it, which is why fence finishes break down faster and need a product built for that exposure.

Neighbor-facing surfaces.
The back side of your fence is often visible to a neighbor's yard or a shared common area, so we finish both faces, not just the side you see from your porch.

Material-specific approach

Wood takes stain differently depending on species and age — a new cedar fence needs to weather for a few weeks before staining, while an older, graying fence needs a wash and brightener to accept color evenly. Vinyl requires a coating engineered to flex with temperature swings, since standard exterior paint will crack and peel off vinyl within a season. Metal fencing needs rust removal and a rust-inhibiting primer before any topcoat, especially on wrought iron that's been outside for years. We match the product and prep to what's actually on your property.

HOA color approval
Many neighborhoods across Gastonia, Belmont and the greater Charlotte area have HOA guidelines specifying approved fence colors or stain shades. We can work from your community's approved color list, or help you submit a sample for board approval before we start.

How often does a fence need to be painted?

A semi-transparent stain on a wood fence typically lasts 2–3 years before it needs a refresh, while a solid stain or paint can last 4–6 years with proper prep. Vinyl coatings and metal fence paint generally hold up 5+ years. We're happy to give you a maintenance timeline specific to your fence during your free estimate.
